How long have you been unemployed?

Its been a while since I was and although I’m in a crap job it covers the bills and that’s all I need it to do. I hope you find something soon, its not fun and far more stressful than a job.

I was in that hole for 3 years brother and it fucking sucks. And it’s not like I’m some uneducated lout either (me being a Yankee fan is irrelevant). Just keep pushing...if I made it out, you can too.

Dude, I feel your pain. I was out for 8 months. Finally caved and took a job three states away, but it's a good job. How long you been out? What do you do, and where are you? Maybe we can help.

Been there. Treat the job hunt like a job. Wake up every morning and get ready for “work”, just like you would if you had a job. Take a shower, make breakfast, get dressed, etc.

Beyond that, figure out what you want to do with yourself. Where do you want to work, and / or what do you want to do?

Don’t focus on yourself, or even what you have done in the past. Focus on what you can do for the companies that you’re talking to. Why is it a Good Move (tm) for them to hire you? What sets you apart from the 100+ other people that applied for the job?

Tailor your resume and cover letter to every job description rather than just spamming the same thing out to everyone. Companies don’t have time to look through every resume they get by a real person, so they run them through a keyword scanner. For example, if the job description says “Requires MS Excel experience”, make sure you have “MS Excel” listed somewhere. That will get you points on their resume scoring system.

Also, set goals for yourself. My goals were to have at least one interview per day, and to apply for every job that came up on my LinkedIn search, regardless of weather or not I was qualified. That helped me to remain fresh.

Good luck! If you find yourself distracted and down on the dumps, the only way to get through it is to put your head down and try harder.

One thing that helped me, (laid off 3 times in the last several years...) was to schedule time when it was ok not to worry about it. Spend 5-6 hours a day actively doing job search activities, a few hours of life/self improvement type activities (house work, education, exercise, etc) then consider it done, off the clock, obligation fulfilled for the day.
